Lady Landfred (1964) was a black, 15hh Thoroughbred mare by Landau and from Miss Whitfred. She was a product of classic English breeding and was breath taking to look at. Fat Black was one of our favourite mares and created an extremely successful family dynasty. We thought she deserves her own page. Unfortunately Alan and Sarah were terrible photographers and never thought to take a photo of this magnificent mare.
While Lady Landfred was owned by a Thoroughbred stud, Kate Jones - of Brandarra Stud fame - had an eye on her for over eight years, patiently waiting for her to be available for purchase. When Kate's phone rang to say that Lady Landfred was for sale Kate was just about to leave for the UK to buy some more Riding Pony stock for her Stud so was not in the position to buy her. We are eternally grateful that Kate Jones told us that Lady Landfred was for sale - that was in 1979 and the rest is history!
Fat Black only produced 3 foals for us but they were all Royal Show winners and as breeding stock have left their mark on the show world. Her three foals were all by Treharne Talisman and are:
CHIPPENHAM CRUSADER (1981)
Liver Chestnut, 14.2hh
Jaguar was Champion Riding Pony Stallion/Colt at the 1984 Royal Melbourne Show. He covered Perkins of Spring before he was sold and produced Chippenham Cabriolet who was EFA State Pony of the Year in New South Wales and Western Australia. Jaguar was Champion In-Hand and under saddle on numerous occasions at both Melbourne and Adelaide Royals. Amongst many successful progeny, he is the sire of the current EFA National Galloway of the Year - Janevelyn Jazzman.
Reserve Champion Galloway Stallion/Colt at the 1983 Royal Melbourne Show, where he was sold, gelded and went on to be successful under saddle.
CHIPPENHAM JAGUAR (1982)
Black 14.3hh
CHIPPENHAM GAZELLE (1984)
Bay 14.2hh
Gazelle was second in the 2 year old filly class at the 1986 Royal Melbourne Show and won the 3 year old filly class the following year. She was shown under saddle with success but was probably 'before her time' and would not be out of place in the show pony ring today. 'Wonder' was retained by the Stud and in fact was our sole broodmare from 1993 until 2000, when a throroughbred mare joined her in the broodmare band.
She produced 9 foals for us and although some were only lightly shown they were all winners from agricultural to national level, both in-hand and under saddle. Gazelle passed away early 2006 whilst in foal to Royal Command of Beckworth and we miss her greatly. Her children are:
Chippenham Lynx (1993) by Keston Royal Occasion. Liver Chestnut Stallion, owned by the Hart Family of Kallaroo Stud, Winchelsea.
Chippenham Society (1995) by Keston Royal Occasion. Bay mare, 13.2hh. She placed at Royal Show level while owned by Jo Devrome before becoming a broodmare. Over the last 2 years Society's daughters Hibrie Symphony (Oakvale Serenade) and Hibrie Countess (Royal Command of Beckworth) - bred by Emma Richardson - have placed highly at the Royal Melbourne Horse Show in Victoria. Now owned by Joan Bell of Belrose Stud.
Chippenham Mir (1996) by Kirreway Touch the Stars. Brown mare, 13.2hh. Has been retained by us as a broodmare.
